I had a customer in my shop over the weekend who said, "Man, I need to get me a hobby like yours" -- to which I kindly explained that it's not a hobby but a full-time job! (and often more than a full-time job)! I guess she thought it was a hobby since I was working on a Sunday.
It made me think of a quote I had just read in the Fretboard Journal that morning, which could easily be applied to violin makers as well:
" ... the great thing about being a guitar builder is that you get to work half days. What you do with the other 12 hours is up to you."
Get it?

Last week, someone asked me what I did and I told them I was a bow maker. They told me that was a nice hobby.
Ha! I'm laughing with you.
You got to!
Being a procedures analyst or a mid-level manager is work. Making things that will last for decades or centuries is a hobby. Interesting how our society has become recently.
So true.
Being a professional Violin maker is a very nice hobby!!
